Learning to use Windows XP registry is not as intimidating as you might think. You can learn how to back up your operating system’s registry and restore it to its previous state easily by following a few simple steps.

What is Windows XP Registry?

If you use Windows XP as your operating system, the registry repair is an important part of your operating system that can help you customize Windows XP for your unique experience. The registry is simply the database that stores the information used to configure Windows XP You can use the registry to customize how your operating system looks, how it starts up and how to restore the operating system back to the original configurations when problems occur.

How Do I find Windows XP Registry?

Finding the registry in Windows XP is easy. Before you make any changes to the registry though, you need to create a backup so the registry can be restored. You can use the System Restore feature to back up the registry. To reach system restore, follow these steps: Click on the Start button and then click Run. Type in

“%SystemRoot%system32\restore\restrui.exe”

and then click on OK.

You will see the page Welcome to System Restore and an option to create a restore point. Click on this button and then click Next. On the next page, you can label the restore point. Use the date as the label or else name the label with the change you are implementing, such as Before Installing Registry Cleaner and the date. Once you’ve label the restore point, simply click on Create. The system will create the restore point and ask if you want to close. Click Close.

If your computer has been running slowly or freezing often, you may have too many errors in your system registry. There are many registry cleaners available online, but always follow these steps to back up registry before using any registry repair program.

After you make changes to your registry, such as adding or deleting a program or using a registry cleaner, you may find that the problem isn’t solved or that it is actually worse than before. If this happens, don’t panic. You can follow this easy to process to restore the registry to an earlier time.

Again, begin by clicking on Start and then Run. Type in

%SystemRoot%\System32\Restore\Rstrul.exe

and then click OK. When the Welcome to System Restore Screen pops up, click on Restore my Computer to an earlier time and then click next. Click the System Checkpoint that you labeled earlier and then click next and OK. You’ll be prompted to confirm the restore point selection, so click OK so the system can restore your registry to where it was before you made any changes.

Now that you know how to use Windows XP Registry to back up and restore your operating systems data system files, you can feel more confident adding and deleting programs and files from your home computer system.
